Review Summary

This machine just might be the ultimate entry-level cyclocross bicycle. Still, the Merit 1 is so much more than that – it’s also an excellent ride for touring and commuting. It’s 6061 aluminum frame and alloy SPF fork make it one robust set of wheels.

The bike really excels on harsh terrain and is manufactured to cater to your needs. That’s mostly due to it’s set of wide tires that make it quite stable and able to take on obstacles that are an essential part of any cyclocross course. So what makes the Merit 1 one of the best cyclocross bikes?

  • FRAME – 6061 Alluminium Double-Butted Custom Formed Tubing

  • WEIGHT – 22.60 lbs

  • BRAKES – Shimano Claris STI

  • TIRES – Kenda Kwick Roller Sport 700X28c

Raleigh Bikes Merit 1 – Features

The ride is built upon an AL-6061 double-butted custom form tubing frame that’s lightweight and that ensures maximum durability. Not to forget the custom tapered alloy SPF fork that adds to the overall speed. The whole thing weighs approximately 22.5 pounds, which doesn’t make it the lightest model out there, but it’s still lightweight enough for an elegant cruise.

The Merit 1 is fitted with Kenda Kwick Roller Sport 700 BY 28c tires. Their width makes the ride extra stable and allows for excellent acceleration.

There’s also the optional 700 x 28c add-on that’s more intrinsic than conventional tire rubber. The add-on is superb as it makes the ride quite cushy.

The Shimano Claris 8-spd STi shifters are quite great for riders who are still not so confident when it comes to unknown terrain. The 16-speed pair of shifters ought to make sure you’ll have no troubles rolling over hills and other raised terrain.

Cranks and Derailleurs

The model comes with aluminum cranks fitted with 2x8 Shimano Claris derailleurs. They offer the rider a wide variety of gear options, sealing excellent performance on all kinds of terrain. The drivetrain provides reliable shifting.

If the shifters aren’t enough to boost your confidence, there are the Tektro dual pivot caliper brakes. Calipers are a self-contain mechanism, and these particular ones do require a bit of know-how for one to utilize their maximum potential, but once you get the hang of them, you’ll be, well, not unstoppable. OK, that doesn’t sound right, but you get the picture.

These calipers are as safe as they get and provide the user with sufficient stoppage power. If you are already an experienced rider, you’ll have no problems appreciating their efficiency instantaneously.

The Price

Perhaps it’s not rightfully a stand-alone feature, but it’s undoubtedly one of the best things about this bicycle. Even though it’s not as well-equipped as the Merit 2 and 3, it’ll still give you a bang for your buck. If you are still trying to figure out if cyclocross is your kind of things, the Merit 1 enables you to do it without breaking the bank.

Requires Assembly

Even though it’s undoubtedly an entry-level bicycle, not every aspect of it is entry-level. The model comes 85% assembled, and the rest is up to you. There are some components left to be installed, and if you are not entirely sure you can do it correctly, it’s best to bring it down to a bike shop.

Brakes Come with a Learning Curve

Again, not something one would expect from an entry-level model. More experienced riders won’t have any problems operating the brakes, but utter CX beginners will have some getting-used-to.

Merit 1 is undoubtedly one of the best cyclocross bikes for beginners. It has just what you need for starting for your daily commute. Considering its price point, you’re definitely getting more than you’re paying for with this one.

It’s a sturdy model that will serve you for a long time thanks to its high-quality components. If the machine doesn’t have all you’d like, but you love the overall feeling of the model, you’re in luck as Raleigh’s Merit 2 and 3 models are more advanced, but quite similar to the Merit 1.
